Sun Eagle's mother stood beside her husband Chief Antelope Buck, observing without approval. Kidibattsk's lips were pursed tightly together as she watched the lovely woman being forced to climb the scaffolding. She was not sure if she could bear watching another woman's body become filled with arrows. It was a practice that should be banned!
Yet Kidibattsk could not voice her opinion aloud. She was the wife of the chief. She knew that deep within her husband's heart he was weary of such practices, also. It was the elders that he was continuing to please.
Not wanting to watch the young lady being tied to the scaffolding, Kidibattsk turned her eyes away and looked at a maiden standing beside her whose hands were covering something at her neck.
Then Kidibattsk's eyes widened in surprise as the maiden's hand lowered and unconsciously revealed the shell necklace that she had taken from Kiriki.
Kidibattsk turned to the maiden and clasped her hands onto her shoulders. "The necklace!" she demanded, her voice a forced whisper. "Where did you get it? I know that necklace! I made it with my own hands!"
The maiden paled and gasped, covering the necklace with her hand again. "I took it from the woman who is the sacrifice," she defended. "Why should I not? She will soon be dead."
Kidibattsk's eyes wavered as she turned and looked up at Kiriki, confused.
Then she looked over at Brown Bear, seeing the gleam in his eyes as he waited patiently for the ritual to be completed. He had known all along who he had abducted for the ritualhe had taken his brother's intended!
Rage filled Kidibattsk's veins. She reached for the necklace, yanked it from the young woman's neck, and started to rush toward the scaffold, but was stopped by strong hands.
"Do not interfere," Chief Antelope Buck said, his voice drawn. "It is too late."
Kidibattsk looked up into her husband's eyes, stunned. Then she humbly went to his side and joined the others in watching, the broken necklace still clutched within her hand. Tears rushed from her eyes when she looked up at Kiriki's innocence. Sun Eagle had been right when he had described the loveliness of his woman, and also her courage.
